Hand Warmer Design Challenge:
In this project, groups were tasked with designing a cheap but efficient chemical hand warmer to sell to students for winter sports. The main requirements were the ability to contain 50 mL of water, and to be able to heat up by 20 degrees Celsius.
After an original idea of snapping some barrier inside of the hand warmer, we settled on a dual pocket design which was much nicer - and safer. In manufacturing, the pockets are filled with our ionic salt, Calcium Chloride, and water. They are prevented from mixing by a heat-sealed barrier, but a gap is clipped at the top to allow transfer when the user so desires. Reacting simply means mixing the water and salt after taking off the clip and shaking the bag around a bit.
Our design was our biggest success. It is simple, elegant, and functional - everything necessary for a product we would sell. Another success was keeping the pricing low. This would allow for a huge profit margin at even low prices, allowing for a lot of money to come in for the science and sports programs. A large flaw was our work ethic. Many of us (including myself) would just slack off for most of the time, leaving most of the day's work to be left to one person in the group. Hand in hand with work ethic is our professionalism, or lack there of. The science and design show one image: sophistication, but our presentation was anything but, with a wacky design and sometimes utter nonsense.
