Project Description: The Hybrid Car Design project was to create an alternative-energy car for Hyundai. Off-limits options included nuclear, electrical, and chemical energy forms, because the energy needed to be safe and alternative. My group's original design was using elastic energy through balloons. We first tried using standard party balloons, but they couldn't exert enough force in order to propel the weighted car. Our next attempt at balloons was using the long, flying balloons. With enough, we could propel the weighted car... about 6 inches. We instead jumped on the rubber-bandwagon (see what I did there?), using elastic energy through twisting rubber bands. This worked exceedingly well, and our car could travel a good 5 meters before stopping.
Reflection: Collaboration wise, there were quite a few pits for this project. For some reason, Ellie found many reasons to call me out on something, like I hadn't done anything, when I had. In addition, she would not let me do anything, so I couldn't work as much as I had hoped. Aside from that, the project was fun, from blowing up balloons, to twisting rubber bands. That was a huge peak. Working with Ethan was great, because we got along quite well, and we're now friends. Unfortunately, as with the rest of class, time management was not a strong suit. By the time we had three days left, we scrapped our entire design and started over, not just through car, but through energy as well. We still managed to finish, however, even if it was by the skin of our teeth. Overall, I liked this project, and I think it would be interesting to just conceptualize an energy form for use (if we didn't have materials for said energy form).
